Braga – Portugal

Braga is a city and a municipality, capital of the northwestern Portuguese district of Braga and of the historical and cultural Minho Province.

Built in the 11th century, the Sé de Braga is the oldest cathedral in Portugal (photo below).  It was built in the late gothic style was built. The galilee has ribbed vaulting and is decorated with statues and gargoyles.

The historical center of Braga was very well kept. There are numerous churches in a very small radius.

The there are many restaurants and shops.

Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

Is a Portuguese Catholic shrine about 20-30 mins from the center of Braga. It’s a major tourist attraction.

On 2019 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To reach the Sanctuary by foot there is a Baroque stairway that climbs 116 meters ….573 steps.

Since it was a bloomy day there were hardly no visitors, I was able to park my car probably 30 meter away.

The interior of the building was very modest and it was asked to not take photos.

The Sanctuary was very pretty but I enjoyed the drive to it the most.
