FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT – DETROIT, MICHIGAN

Smith House

Another of Wright Usonian home designs. The house was built from 1949-1950.

Like many of his designs he plays with compressing spaces.  The main entrance is low on purpose to make the users uncomfortable so they don’t stay there for long.

Flat ceilings and like most of his designs they have some water proofing issues.

The part of the house facing the driveway has small windows to give the house privacy.

The back of the house opens to the pond.

Wright visited the house himself in 1951, and called it “my little gem”.

Affleck House

Completed in 1941.  Currently own by t is owned by Lawrence Technological University.

It is one of only about 25 pre-World War II Usonians to be built
