Initially established in 1691, the mission of San Xavier was the first of the missions listed in the World Heritage Site.

The mission of San José de Chiquitos was the third mission built of those of the World Heritage Site.
The Cathedral began to be built in 1748 with the impulse of Jesuit Missionaries and it was completed in 1761. In 1948 there was a fire but it was rebuilt between 1998 and 2001.
