City Palace – Udaipur, India

The City Palace started its construction in 1559 and it wasn’t finished until the 18th century.

The Manek Chowk is the courtyard in front of the main entrance to the Mardana Mahal, Palace of Kings. It’s probably the most recognizable part of the entire complex

This courtyard was used for public meetings, ceremonial processions, horse cavalry, elephant parades, and other festivals.

The City Palace its a mixed of Medieval, European and Chinese architecture, it contains various towers, domes, arches,courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms and hanging gardens. The entirely complex was built in granite and marble.

Below the Mor Chowk or Peacock square were the three peacocks represent the three seasons of summer, winter and monsoon. The peacocks have been crafted with 5000 pieces of glass in green, gold, and blue colours.

Badi Mahal also known as the Garden Palace has  104 intricately carved pillars that were made out of local marble. Even the ceiling is made by marble tiles.

The location of the  Badi Mahal its whats makes it unique. Even thou this is the highest point of the palace it’s actually on the ground level, allowing all the trees to grow without problem.

Badi Chitrashali Chowk was constructed between 1710-1734 and it was used as an entertainment space by the kings.

The place is decorated with  blue Chinese tiles, colored glass, and wall murals.
