The structure occupies an enormous site of 494 acres. A huge rectangular moat surrounds the temple, which rises through a series of terraces to the central shrine, towering at a height of 669 feet.<\/p>\n

Originally constructed as a\u00a0Hindu\u00a0temple<\/sup>\u00a0dedicated to the god\u00a0Vishnu\u00a0for the\u00a0Khmer Empire\u00a0by King\u00a0Suryavarman II, it was gradually transformed into a\u00a0Buddhist\u00a0temple towards the end of the 12th century; as such, it is also described as a “Hindu-Buddhist” temple.<\/p>\n

This arrangement reflects the traditional Khmer idea of the temple mountain, in which the temple represents Mount Meru, the home of the gods in Hinduism.<\/p>\n

Angkor Wat is the prime example of the classical style of\u00a0Khmer architecture\u2014the Angkor Wat style\u2014to which it has given its name.<\/p>\n

By the 12th century, Khmer architects had become skilled and confident in the use of\u00a0sandstone\u00a0(rather than brick or\u00a0laterite) as the main building material.<\/p>\n

Architecturally, the elements characteristic of the style include: the\u00a0ogival, redented towers shaped like\u00a0lotus\u00a0buds; half-galleries\u00a0to broaden passageways; axial galleries connecting enclosures; and the cruciform terraces which appear along the main axis of the temple.<\/p>\n

Typical decorative elements are\u00a0devatas (or apsaras),\u00a0bas-reliefs, and on\u00a0pediments\u00a0extensive garlands and narrative scenes.<\/p>\n
