{"id":204,"date":"2017-02-11T01:16:55","date_gmt":"2017-02-11T01:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/?p=204"},"modified":"2017-03-22T03:40:58","modified_gmt":"2017-03-22T03:40:58","slug":"marble-house-newport-rhode-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/2017\/02\/11\/marble-house-newport-rhode-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Marble House &#8211; Newport, Rhode Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marble House is a Gilded Age mansion\u00a0designed by the society architect Richard Morris Hunt.\u00a0The mansion was built as a summer &#8220;cottage&#8221; retreat between 1888 and 1892 for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt, the fifty-room mansion required a staff of 36 servants, including butlers, maids, coachmen, and footmen.\u00a0The mansion cost $11 million ($260,000,000 in 2009 dollars) of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet (14,000 m\u00b3) of marble.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-205\" src=\"http:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSCN4906-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSCN4906-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSCN4906-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSCN4906-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/DSCN4906-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Marble House is one of the earliest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the United States, with design inspiration from the Petit Trianon at the Palace of Versailles.\u00a0Jules Allard and Sons of Paris, first hired by the Vanderbilts to design some of the interiors for their Petit Chateau on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, designed the French-inspired interiors of Marble House also.\u00a0The grounds were designed by landscape architect Ernest W. Although it appears to be a two-story structure, it is actually spread over four levels.\u00a0The facade of the mansion features bays that are defined by two story Corinthian pilasters. These frame arched windows on the ground floor and rectangular ones on the second on most of the facade.
