The\u00a0Taj Mahal the most famous\u00a0ivory-white marble building in the world is a\u00a0Islamic\u00a0mausoleum\u00a0on the south bank of the\u00a0Yamuna.<\/p>\n

It was commissioned in 1632\u00a0to house the\u00a0tomb\u00a0of his favourite wife,\u00a0Mumtaz Mahal.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor,\u00a0Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.<\/p>\n

Four minarets frame the tomb, one at each corner of the plinth facing the chamfered corners, which are each more than 130\u00a0ft tall, divided into three equal parts by two working balconies that ring the tower.<\/p>\n

Because of its shape, the dome is often called an\u00a0onion dome\u00a0or\u00a0amrud<\/i>\u00a0(guava dome).<\/p>\n

The decorative elements can be grouped into either\u00a0calligraphy, abstract forms or vegetative motifs.\u00a0The calligraphy on the Great Gate reads<\/p>\n

“O Soul, thou art at rest. Return to the Lord at peace with Him, and He at peace with you.”<\/i><\/p>\n

At the far end of the complex are two grand red sandstone buildings that mirror each other, and face the sides of the tomb. The backs of the buildings parallel the western and eastern walls. The western building is a mosque and the other is the\u00a0jawab<\/i>\u00a0(answer), thought to have been constructed for architectural balance although it may have been used as a guesthouse.<\/p>\n
