Hudson Yards it is the largest private real estate development in the United States by area.<\/p>\n

The architectural firm\u00a0Kohn Pedersen Fox\u00a0designed the\u00a0master plan\u00a0for the site, and architects including\u00a0Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill,\u00a0Thomas Heatherwick,\u00a0Roche-Dinkeloo, and\u00a0Diller Scofidio + Renfro\u00a0contributed designs for individual structures.<\/p>\n

The Shed<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Shed is\u00a0a\u00a0nonprofit organization\u00a0flexible structure focused on providing cultural programming.<\/p>\n

Construction on the Shed started in 2015, using a design from lead architect\u00a0Diller Scofidio + Renfro\u00a0and collaborating architect\u00a0Rockwell Group. Structural engineering, fa\u00e7ade and kinetic design was provided by\u00a0Thornton Tomasetti.<\/p>\n

As of March\u00a02019, the Shed had received $529 million in donations for its $550 million capital campaign to fund building construction, programming and start-up expenses.<\/p>\n

The building’s roof features a 8,000,000-pound (3,600,000\u00a0kg) retractable shell, made of an exposed steel diagram frame, clad in a Teflon-like material called ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). This material has the thermal properties of insulating glass at a fraction of the weight.<\/p>\n

The shell can close and open within 5 minutes\u00a0and when the shell is retracted, the open-air plaza becomes a publicly accessible outdoor space.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0The shell retracts on eight bogie wheels, each 6 feet (1.8\u00a0m) in diameter.<\/p>\n

15 Hudson Yards<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is a residential building completed in 2019, designed by\u00a0Diller Scofidio + Renfro.\u00a0 The nickname for the tower is\u00a0 “the Corset Tower”,\u00a0there are traps along the middle and top part of the building to make it more “fluid-like”, giving it an appearance of having a corset.<\/p>\n

The building includes 285 residential units.\u00a0The 50th and 51st floor are a 40,000 square feet (3,700\u00a0m2<\/sup>) amenity space containing an aquatics center with a 75-foot-long swimming pool, spa, fitness center, yoga studio, children\u2019s playroom, private dining suites, screening room, golf club lounge, wine storage, and business center.<\/p>\n

The tower is integrated with\u00a0The Shed.<\/p>\n

The Vessel<\/strong><\/p>\n

Permanent art installation designed by Thomas Heatherwick. Heatherwick took inspiration from Indian step wells in the design.\u00a0\u00a0honeycomb-like structure rises 16 stories and consists of 154 flights of\u00a0stairs.<\/p>\n

The original cost for the this construction was $75\u00a0million,\u00a0\u00a0the projections were later revised to between $150 and $200\u00a0million. The designer a\u00a0attributed this at the complexity of building the steel pieces.\u00a0The pieces \u00a0were assembled in Italy and then\u00a0shipped to the Hudson River docks.<\/p>\n

One nice way to get to Hudson Yard is walking in the High Line.\u00a0 The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated\u00a0linear park,\u00a0greenway\u00a0and\u00a0rail trail\u00a0created on a former\u00a0New York Central Railroad.<\/p>\n
