San Pedro de Atacama is a town set on an arid high plateau in the Andes mountains of northeastern Chile.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It’s a very popular destination among Chilean tourists and international visitors.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Church of San Pedro de Atacama was constructed during the\u00a0Spanish colonial period, it is reportedly the second oldest church in Chile.\u00a0Indigenous\u00a0adobe\u00a0material were used in the church’s construction.\u00a0The church was declared a historical monument in 1951.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Both the interior and exterior are painted white, while the altar is of bright coloring. The walls, roof, and the entrance door are built with\u00a0algarrobo<\/i>\u00a0wood and\u00a0card\u00f3n<\/i>\u00a0(cactus wood), and bound together by\u00a0llama leather, in a technique that is traditional to the\u00a0altiplano.<\/p>\n

The roof is made of large rafters of\u00a0algarrobo<\/i>\u00a0wood that are overlaid with slices of cactus logs.<\/p>\n

The town of San Pedro de Atacama is a tourist town. As a personal experience, an important thing to take notice is that everything closes at midday, only restaurants are available. But no pharmacy is open during this time.<\/p>\n

VALLE DE LA MUERTE\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Valle de la Muerte\u00a0 is\u00a0 a valley where gigantic dunes and rocks abound.<\/p>\n

EL TATIO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

El Tatio\u00a0 is a\u00a0geyser\u00a0field located in the\u00a0Andes\u00a0Mountains of\u00a0northern Chile\u00a0at 4,320 metres (14,170\u00a0ft) above mean sea level.\u00a0It is the third-largest geyser field in the world and the largest in the\u00a0Southern Hemisphere<\/p>\n

SALAR DE ATACAMA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Salar de Atacama\u00a0is the largest\u00a0salt flat\u00a0in\u00a0Chile and\u00a0 the third largest in the world.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

LAGUNA CEJAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Laguna Cejar is a sink hole lake in the Salar de Atacama, 18\u00a0km from San Pedro, Chile. It has a\u00a0salt concentration\u00a0that ranges from 5 to 28% (50 to 280 parts per thousand), producing at the higher end of the range an effect of floating like the\u00a0Dead Sea.<\/p>\n

MACHUCA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The town of Machuca is a small town of no more than 20 houses and a church, is located about 4,000 meters above sea level.<\/p>\n

The town at this point is almost just a tourist attraction, at the time of my visit I was able to see some of the natives of the area but none of them were young.\u00a0 The town is dying very slowly because of migration to larger cities, young people don’t want to stay and raise alpacas and llamas.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Every house in Machuca has a little cross on top, the belief is that by doing this evil spirits will not enter their home.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The main activity are the llamas, currently the few inhabitants of\u00a0Machuca\u00a0are beginning to participate in tourism.<\/p>\n
