A fun and interesting fact about this space is that John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum (the famous American artist and sculptor that who designed\u00a0 Mount Rushmore in South Dakota)\u00a0 was the sculptor of 20 angels that are placed in the entrance of this chapel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1185\" src=\"http:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSCN6335-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSCN6335-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSCN6335-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/franciscaclaret.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/DSCN6335-1200x1600.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fun fact is that Mr. Borglum sculpted feminine angels which caused\u00a0a lot of\u00a0 controversy in the Church and in the media. The Cathedral decided it\u00a0<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">was best to stick to the scriptural tradition, and asked Mr. Borglum to make sure his angels looked masculine.\u00a0 The sculptor agreed and destroyed the plaster casts, though preserving the two faces and the hand to take home with him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">In an interview with The New York Times he said \u201cI felt like a murderer,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t want anyone to touch them except myself. So I simply broke them to pieces myself. It depicts the Archangel Michael embracing one of nine giraffes after he defeated\u00a0 Satan. I do not understand the meaning or the symbology behind the giraffes, at the bottom there is a plaque that saids \u201cmost peaceable of animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is also a lion lying down with a lamb. The fountain\u2019s spiraling base represents a double-helix of DNA. Above the\u00a0 pedestal rests a giant crab, to remind us of life\u2019s origins in the sea and the struggle to survive.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is a moon facing west. Satan&#8217;s head dangles beneath the crab\u2019s claw.
