Designed in 1888 however it begun its construction\u00a0 in\u00a0 1892.\u00a0Originally the Cathedral was designed in the\u00a0Byzantine Revival \/\u00a0Romanesque Revival\u00a0styles, but in 1909 the design changed to a\u00a0Gothic Revival, the architect for this last style change was done by\u00a0Ralph Adams Cram\u00a0of the Boston firm Cram.<\/p>\n

Since the Cathedral its still unfinished there some dispute about whether this cathedral or\u00a0Liverpool Cathedral\u00a0is the world’s largest Anglican cathedral and church. But\u00a0\u00a0without dispute this is the fifth largest Christian church in the world.<\/p>\n

It has the longest Gothic nave in the United States, at 230 feet.<\/p>\n

The stained glass\u00a0is the largest\u00a0rose window\u00a0in the U.S, built and designed by glass artist\u00a0Charles Connick,<\/span>\u00a0 its constructed out of 10,000 pieces of glass.<\/p>\n

Below is a photograph of the chapel of Saint Saviour, dedicated to the churches of the east. A fun and interesting fact about this space is that John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum (the famous American artist and sculptor that who designed\u00a0 Mount Rushmore in South Dakota)\u00a0 was the sculptor of 20 angels that are placed in the entrance of this chapel.<\/p>\n

The fun fact is that Mr. Borglum sculpted feminine angels which caused\u00a0a lot of\u00a0 controversy in the Church and in the media. The Cathedral decided it\u00a0was best to stick to the scriptural tradition, and asked Mr. Borglum to make sure his angels looked masculine.\u00a0 The sculptor agreed and destroyed the plaster casts, though preserving the two faces and the hand to take home with him. <\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with The New York Times he said \u201cI felt like a murderer,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t want anyone to touch them except myself. So I simply broke them to pieces myself. I should hate to tell you how I felt when I did it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The cathedral is full of interesting details, from left to right Martin Luther King, Jr.,\u00a0Albert Einstein,\u00a0Susan B. Anthony, and\u00a0Mahatma Gandhi.<\/p>\n

Above is the Peace Fountain, which is pretty strange, it was designed by Greg Wyattin\u00a01985 . It depicts the Archangel Michael embracing one of nine giraffes after he defeated\u00a0 Satan. I do not understand the meaning or the symbology behind the giraffes, at the bottom there is a plaque that saids \u201cmost peaceable of animals.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is also a lion lying down with a lamb. The fountain\u2019s spiraling base represents a double-helix of DNA. Above the\u00a0 pedestal rests a giant crab, to remind us of life\u2019s origins in the sea and the struggle to survive.<\/p>\n

Then there is a moon facing west. Satan’s head dangles beneath the crab\u2019s claw. It’s a very cool and strange fountain.<\/p>\n
